LETTER: Let Katz Extend Waller Legacy

2-26-10

To the Editor:
I would like to thank Carol Waller for her many years of dedication and hard work as Cooperstown’s mayor.  Carol’s countless hours of work as a mayor will always be respected and will soon be coming to and end this March.
We know her love for the village will always be true. We are all anxious about what type of “change” to our village will come with a new mayor.
To me it makes sense to have our current deputy mayor, Jeff Katz, continue with Carol’s legacy. Jeff has proven himself as a trustee to have been appointed our deputy mayor. Like most communities, our village is facing economic hardships with a crumbling infrastructure that needs immediate attention.
Without having to raise taxes again to our village homeowners, Jeff sought out a much-needed revenue stream, paid parking. For a minimal amount of money and no impact to the other two paid parking sites, the village found a new way to help raise the much-needed revenue.
Can you imagine how the village would look today if paid parking was established in 1939? This type of forward thinking is what the village needs:  Paid parking is a reality in every city in America.
Jeff was a catalyst to keep the police department running for three shifts, when other trustees were so quick to give up our security that we expect.
Jeff was also there to give the much needed raises our village employees without increasing the tax base. This is the leadership our village needs to move forward in these tough economic times with a positive outcome.
