To the Editor:
Cooperstown means something very special to me, a fourth-generation native, as it does many people.
It certainly means something to thousands of visitors who choose to make it their travel destination each year.
For those of us who live here year round, it means more than the museums and the souvenir shops, though.
Whether I was born here and grew up here, or whether you chose to move here later in life, there are reasons we stay.
We have found a quality of life that is unique.
I do truly love and appreciate Cooperstown not just because of my roots, but also because of its rich history, rural atmosphere, remarkable natural beauty, and responsive citizens.
I am running for village trustee. It would be an honor for me to serve in this office so I could return my time and energy to the community that raised me.
I have spoken with many other residents, and I share their concerns.
I want to address the serious parking problems, ensure 24/7 police coverage with the most economical and efficient schedule possible, commence repairs to the village library building, and assess ways to “go green.”
There are problems that need fixing now, and not by “knee-jerk” reactions, but by thoughtful, well-planned, and coordinated efforts.
Without the vision of a master plan, the solutions we try to implement are like taking random shots at a moving target.
We, all the elected officials working together with the body of residents – need to agree on fundamental goals and specific strategies to attain them.
With your support I can help create this vision and make it a reality.
ALTON G. DUNN, III
