LETTER: Cooperstown Concert Series Wins Support For Katz

3-05-10

To the Editor:
I will be voting for Jeff Katz on March 16. I make this decision as a life-long conservative Republican.
I do not know Jeff’s positions on the national issues – but whatever they are I do not believe that political philosophy or dogma matters in Cooperstown.  Politics really are local here.
I appreciate Jeff’s work that has contributed to the cultural and economic well-being in the village.
Specifically, he has been a force behind the Cooperstown Concert Series. The artists that come to Cooperstown truly enrich our community. Very few, if any, communities our size have been able to attract the diverse and talented performers that regularly appear here.
I also believe that Jeff clearly sees the economic issues that confront us. The basic model of a low tax base, with major “carve-outs” for non-profit institutions, and high municipal costs driven by a tourist industry does not work.
Jeff’s leadership on paid parking was one positive step towards addressing the problem. Much more creative thinking is necessary to improve the village’s finances.
In summary, I believe Jeff has the energy, creativity, and passion to improve Cooperstown.
JIM HOWARTH
